No more petrol price increase?

June 12th, 2008 3 Comments   Posted in Current Issues

There will be no further increase to the price of fuel in the country this year. This is despite the possibility of the global price of oil reaching US$200 (RM654) per barrel, as forecast by some analysts.

This latest decision by the Cabinet came on top of various measures announced on Monday to help the Government cut costs and channel more subsidies to low-income earners.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said to stem any more increase, the Government would have to think of alternative ways to finance its spending.

“Since the Government announced the new price last week, fuel prices have gone up to US$139 per barrel and is still hovering at US$130.

“In fact, the price of oil is expected to remain at high levels in the months to come. The high price of oil means that the market price of petrol at the pumps have now reached RM3.45 per litre,” he said, pointing out that the price should be reviewed to RM3.15 per litre (with a discount of 30 sen) instead of RM2.70 beginning next month.

“However, the Government realised that the rakyat is still trying to adapt to the higher petrol prices. The Cabinet has thus decided there will be no more increase this year,” he told reporters at his office yesterday.

Ok guys, the above statement I got from The Star today. Is it true or it’s just to cool down the rakyat due to the increment of fuel price lately. If I’m not mistaken, before our National Election a few months ago, the Deputy Prime Minister promised, the fuel price will not increase after the election, then what happen now? My answer is, No comment…

Pay the Salaries in Two Instalments

June 12th, 2008 1 Comment   Posted in Current Issues

Hi guys,

The Government decide to pay the salaries of civil servants in two instalments starting from August 2008. What do you think of this decision? Feedback from Cuepacs president, Omar Osman said they understood the rationale behind the move, saying that it would help lower income staff manage their expenses.

“Now that they get their pay every two weeks, they can estimate their expenses better,” he said.

However, Omar said civil servants in the higher income bracket might not like the move as it would curtail their financial freedom.

Meanwhile, MTUC deputy president Mohd Khalid Atan said it was more important to look at how people spend their money.

“It doesn’t matter if they receive their pay once or twice a month. It is how they spend it that matters,” he said.

He said many might encounter difficulties paying their bills and loan instalments at the end of the month with the Government’s move.

Then how about you guys? Do you agree with this decision or not? And what is your opinion?

GEMAS: A Felda settler who made recordings of his sexual acts with a woman for his “own viewing pleasure” is in big trouble after the clips were widely circulated and ended up in the hands of the police.
The 52-year-old settler and his “partner”, a 21-year-old woman, were arrested by police and are expected to be charged in the Sessions Court and Syariah Court soon.

The man had sought the help of a 21-year-old friend to record the sexual acts in a hut in a rubber plantation at Felda Jelai 3 early last month.

The friend used his mobile phone to record the deed.

The recordings, under the title “Budak Jolai” (Budak Jelai), were circulated via Bluebooth and multimedia messaging service (MMS) to almost every settler in Felda Jelai 3 who had a mobile phone.

School uniform sexy, says group

May 22nd, 2008 No Comments   Posted in Current Issues

KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian group condemned the uniform worn by girls at government schools, saying it encouraged rape and pre-marital sex.

“The white blouse is too transparent for girls and it becomes a source of attraction,” National Islamic Students Association of Malaysia vice-president Munirah Bahari said in a statement.

“It becomes a distraction to men, who are drawn to it, whether or not they like looking at it,” she said, calling for a review of uniform policy so that it did not violate Islamic ideals.

In multicultural Malaysia, home to majority-Muslim Malays as well as ethnic Chinese and Indians, female students at government schools have a choice of wearing a white blouse with a knee-length skirt or pinafore.

Rice losing place on Asian plate as diets improve

May 18th, 2008 No Comments   Posted in Current Issues

BEIJING/NEW DEHLI (Reuters) - Rice prices have surged this year for many reasons, but unlike most other commodities, fast-growing Chinese and Indian demand isn’t one of them.

With incomes rising in two countries where a third of the world’s population consumes about half of the world’s rice, more people are eating protein-rich meat and diary, or sampling new foods like pasta, leaving less room on the plate for rice.

If Chinese rice demand follows the trend seen in wealthy Japan it could fall by half in the coming decades, bringing relief to world consumers more anxious than ever after a near trebling in benchmark Asian rice prices this year.
